Alibaba’s Revenues Surged 42% in its Latest Quarter

—compared with a year before. That’s according to the Chinese e-commerce giant’s earnings report on Thursday.

Since 2015, Alibaba’s (ticker: BABA) revenue has been increasing more than 30% each quarter. Despite that, shares of Alibaba have been tumbling this summer. That’s because investors see Alibaba as a proxy for the Chinese economy, which has been showing signs of weakening. Still, Alibaba’s gains show that its huge consumer base and strong purchasing power in China may not be so bad off.

Shares of General Electric Dropped 11% on Thursday

The decline followed the release of an explosive report by a forensic accountant named Harry Markopolos. Markopolos takes credit for correctly identifying the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme.

In this new report, Markopolos claims that General Electric (GE) is involved in a larger accounting fraud than Enron. Enron, you might remember, collapsed after its accounting scandal came to light.

A GE spokesperson said Markopolos’s allegations were “entirely false and misleading.” The company’s CEO, Larry Culp, said: “This is market manipulation—pure and simple.”

Overall U.S. Consumer Spending Climbed 0.6%

—between June and July. That’s on a seasonally adjusted basis and doesn’t include spending at gasoline stations. That said, it’s the biggest monthly gain in consumer spending in a year. That’s according to new data from the Commerce Department. After an exceptionally weak start to the year, core retail spending (unadjusted for inflation) is now growing at the fastest rate since the data began in 1992.

That’s a welcome bright spot for economic news: U.S. Treasurys may be signaling a recession, but the American consumer is still running strong.
